C&N Chairman, President and CEO Charles H. Updegraff, Jr., center, accepts the original Sue Hand painting from Valerie Whyman, donor relations director for the Central Pennsylvania American Red Cross and Craig Harley, chief development officer with the Northeast PA Region, American Red Cross.

WELLSBORO, PA – The American Red Cross has presented Citizens & Northern Bank with an original Sue Hand painting in recognition of the bank’s $50,000 contribution to the Red Cross following last September’s flooding. The painting depicts a Red Cross truck responding to the 1936 flood that inundated the Wyoming Valley.

The bank’s donation was shared by the Lycoming and Bradford/Sullivan chapters and remained in the communities under their umbrellas, as requested by the bank. In addition, 25 of C&N’s 26 offices served as collection points for donated items and monetary contributions. The bank’s Athens office was severely impacted by the flooding and remained closed until last month.

Hand is a Wilkes-Barre area artist. The Red Cross commissioned the painting, which Hand donated and her husband framed without charge. She completed the painting prior to the local flooding following Tropical Storms Lee and Irene.

Both Whyman and Harley said community response following the flooding was overwhelming and gratifying. “Our communities really stepped up,” Harley said.
